About Us
Balbir and Kusam Tuli came to the United States in 1983 with their 3 sons and 2 daughters. The journey of learning to cook traditional Indian food to its perfection comes from a story that goes back to when Balbir and Kusam had an arranged marriage in 1960. Kusam was the youngest girl of 8 children. Her parents discouraged her to contribute in the kitchen, and large importance was given to education. She was always so intrigued by the aroma of the spices that traveled out from the kitchen to where she sat and watched from a window, the food being prepared daily by the older women of the house. When she was 18 years old she was introduced to Balbir, they fell madly in love and got married. She soon realized that Balbir loved good food and enjoyed eating, so her desire to learn to cook was now uncontainable! Very excitedly, she attempted to cook a surprise meal for her husband, insisting on no help from any family member. She was not very surprised when Balbir couldn’t even finish the first bite in his mouth, therefore she cried and cried while Balbir looked at her very confused as to why she was so upset.
From that day on Kusam was in search to master the art of Indian cooking, precious to her heart as a “Jewel”. She cooked and cooked in search of learning about the rich blends of Indian spices, that were artistically modified to different cooking temperatures resulting in flavors that were so unbelievable that now her cooking was well- known not just within the family but the whole town wanted her recipes. Kusam’s recipes have never been a secret, they simply are created with love and freshness!
The “Jewel” is truly that and more, you will feel the love and taste nothing but the freshness in each dish that is made especially for you. The name Jewel of the Crown was chosen by the Tuli Family, where all members of the family from children to grandchildren have worked since we opened doors in 1986. Just as a Jewel is very precious to the heart, so is welcoming you and your family to the first Indian restaurant in the Valley. We look forward to meeting you!
